De Young Barn Project
Chase Heise, Senior Project Manager with the Leelanau Conservancy, called Steve Stier in mid-September 2020 asking for guidance in repointing some stone work on the upper barn at the DeYoung Natural Area in Elmwood Township. The 19th century barn foundation is made of field stones and lime mortar which had deteriorated and was in need of repairs. LCHPS arranged a work session where Chase was instructed and supervised by Steve Stier. Use of proper materials and techniques were practiced which resulted in Chase gaining experience and confidence to continue the remaining repairs with other Conservancy staff and volunteers.
